Strong Start Leads to Victory for Boys U17 Soccer

CHICAGO - The Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys U17 soccer team battled to a wild 6-3 win in Chicago against a tough Sockers FC team over the weekend. The first half saw an empathic response by SSM to last week’s only loss of the season in Toronto. The boys raced to a 5-0 lead within the first 45 minutes as Erick Villatoro ‘20, Matthew Roou ‘21 (2), and Wylie Trujillo ‘20 all got on the scoresheet with assists coming from Andrew Soczynski ‘21, Villatoro, Brody Phan ‘21, and Alvaro Jacinto ‘21. The goals came as a result of perfectly timed runs and passes combined with clinical finishing.

Playing a man down in the second half, the Sabres began to feel pressure from the Sockers as the home team cut the lead down to 5-3. With the Sabres lead in danger and goalkeeper Mitch Budler ‘21 forced to make several great saves, Nehemias Rubio ‘20 came off the bench to secure the win for SSM. After great individual work to draw a penalty, Rubio calmly slotted the resulting spot-kick home to make it 6-3 late on and seal the exciting victory.

The Sabres will travel to Michigan on November 16 for weekend games against the Michigan Wolves and Vardar.
