Boys U17 Silence Minnesota Thunder Academy

FARIBAULT, MINN. - The Shattuck-St. Mary’s Boys U17 soccer team started off a solid weekend with a dramatic late win against a difficult MTA team to remain perfect on the year.

Kicking off at 1:00 p.m. on a chilly Saturday in Minneapolis, SSM started the match on top with plenty of chances created on goal. However, the high pressure by the Sabres went unrewarded as they would walk off at halftime to a frustrating 0-0 scoreline.

The hosts continued to frustrate the Sabres in the second half as they began to grow into the game. Both keepers made important saves with Mitch Budler ‘21 making key stops from a couple MTA counter attacks. The back and forth affair looked like it was heading for a 0-0 draw until, in the dying moments, Donovan Boone ‘21 put Wasi Ewnetu ‘20 through on goal. Ewnetu drew the foul from the MTA keeper and a penalty was awarded to SSM. Brody Phan ‘20 stepped up to bury the penalty with virtually the last kick of the game.

The 1-0 win moves the Sabres to a 4-0 record and marks Mitch Budler’s fourth consecutive clean sheet of the year. In addition, Budler and the Sabres back line have yet to concede a goal this season.

In two weeks, the Sabres will travel to Ontario to take on Toronto FC in a battle of the conference’s two only undefeated teams.
