Sabres Stay Perfect in League Play

FARIBAULT, MINN. - The highly anticipated home opener weekend for the Shattuck St. Mary’s Boys U17 team saw strong showings against the Indiana Fire and Chicago Fire Academies.

In their first contest of the weekend, SSM wore down a tightly organized Indiana defense to earn a 1-0 win. The Sabres controlled possession for the majority of the game, but Indiana did well to stifle attacks throughout. The breakthrough came four minutes from the final whistle when Nehemias Rubio ’20 latched onto a rebound after a shot from Diego Ochoa ’20 rocketed off the crossbar. Mitch Budler ’21, along with the players in front of him, preserved the shutout to win the home-opener.

Sunday saw the U17 team battle to a 3-0 win against an in-form Chicago Fire team that had scored 16 goals in their opening four games. Brody Phan ’21 opened the scoring with a nice finish after good work from Matthew Roou ’21 to slip him in on goal. Roou then got on the scoresheet himself with some nice individual work after a feed from Phan. With the Fire pushing to get back in the game, Donovan Boone ’21 put the game out of sight with a good finish in the box after a cross from Roou. Budler made a huge reaction save in the first half when it was 1-0 and then was called upon a few more times to pull off some highlight-reel saves to earn the shutout, and importantly, notch the second home win and take three games of three in league play overall.

The Sabres will return to play on Saturday, October 13 against Minnesota Thunder Academy.
