Former Sabre Alex Mella ‘17 Receives NAHL Honor

FARIBAULT, MINN. - Former Shattuck-St. Mary’s forward Alex Mella ‘17 has been named the NAHL Central Division Star of the Week for his five-point weekend with the Austin Bruins. The following statement was posted on the NAHL’s official website.

The Austin Bruins kept their hot play going this past weekend with a home-and-home sweep of the Minnesota Wilderness. Bruins forward Alex Mella, 18, had his best weekend in a Bruins uniform as the native of Stamford, Connecticut, recorded five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in the two wins. On Friday, Mella (6’0/187) chimed in with a pair of assists, including one on the game-winning goal in a 4-2 road win in Cloquet. On Saturday, he posted his first career NAHL hat-trick, which included the game-winning goal, in a 5-3 home win to complete the weekend sweep. In 13 games with the Bruins so far this season, the Northeastern commit has nine points. “Alex has been getting a lot of chances but the bounces haven’t been going his way. It’s good to see him get rewarded this past weekend. We expect him to keep up his hard work and continue to make good things happen,” said Bruins head coach Steve Howard.

In addition, Miroslav Mucha ‘16 received an honorable mention for Central Division Star of the Week after recording one goal and three assists with the Minot Minotauros over the weekend.
