Synchro Tryouts

Shattuck-St. Mary's Synchronized Skating Tryout FAQs

Shattuck-St. Mary’s Synchronized Skating Tryout FAQs

  • Are skaters required to attend both tryouts? No, but it is strongly suggested and in the skater’s best interest to attend both sessions if possible. Each session gives skaters and coaches more time together and helps skaters gain confidence for the tryouts.
  • What is the format for the clinics? The clinics feature on-ice instruction from the SSM coaching staff. Skaters are typically grouped in lines, with a mix of returning and new skaters
  • What time should I arrive for clinics and tryouts? We suggest arriving approximately 30 minutes beforehand to allow your skater to be checked in, warm-up, and get their skates on.
  • What should my skater wear to clinics and tryouts? Please wear fitted black leggings and black fitted top of choice or a black skating dress/skirt. Hair should be in a ponytail or bun.
  • Is synchronized skating experience required? No, at these competitive levels, we welcome skaters from the advanced singles, pairs and dance disciplines; they can become very successful synchronized skaters!
  • Which teams will you have in the 2016-17 season? Team rosters are created at the end of tryouts. Each year we field the teams that best represent our demographics – both age and skating level. For the 2016-17 season, we intend to fielded two teams: novice and junior. If we are not able to fill the novice team due to requirement restrictions, we will host an intermediate level.
  • Correct age as of July 1, 2016? U.S. Figure Skating rosters are determined by skaters’ ages on July 1st. For example, even if your skater is only 13 during tryouts but will be turning 14 in June, their “age” for the season is 14. Please register for tryouts for the age your skater will be on July 1, 2016.
  • How and when are the team placements announced? Placements will be sent to the parent email used in your online registration form according to the following schedule: May 20th or sooner
  • What happens next? We will email parents with try-out results; at that time Commitments and contracts for junior, novice teams will be due by June 1st.
  • Try-out and Meeting Parents are welcome to watch try-outs. We will hold a commitment meeting after tryouts and parents need to plan on attending one of the 2 sessions. This meeting will include an informative presentation outlining the scope of commitment for the team, including: practice and competition schedules, financial obligation and payment options, and important policies. It’s very important to attend this meeting.
  • I am interested in the SSM Synchro but cannot make the tryout dates. While we prefer to evaluate the skaters in groups, we can arrange alternative tryouts. This could include evaluating skaters privately. Contact Tom Hickey, Director @ tom.hickey@s-sm.org

Co-Op Skaters Tuition:

Each skater’s tuition (paid monthly) covers ALL expenses associated with the team: travel, ice time, coaching, competition expenses, wardrobe, and even most meals and other expenses associated with the team. We try to avoid any "add-ons" during the season with exception of certain "new skater" wardrobe items.

An initial deposit upon acceptance with a team is due June 1st  and tuition installments are paid for 6-8 months completing before the competitive season ends. Our fees are comparable to other competitive synchronized skating organizations.

Note: Each skater must be a member of United States Figure Skating and the SSM FSC. These costs are individual costs and are not included in team dues.

ALTERNATES:

SSM Synchro is designed for your skater to learn the elite aspects of synchronized skating. One aspect of this program is learning how to be an alternate. Our coaches are committed to giving every skater the opportunity to compete, and we give the same level of attention and coaching to all skaters on each team.

While all skaters will have the opportunity to skate in the line during practice, some skaters will not be selected for competition. Coaches will select skaters for competition any time prior to competition. The group of skaters selected for a particular competition may not be the skaters who are selected for the next competition.

Skaters on our teams should expect that changing skating positions and sharing spots is common and an excellent learning experience. Our coaches firmly believe in the ability to improve individually and will reassess skaters with every competition. The following examples are how we choose skaters to compete in an event; consistent attendance, work ethic, quality of skating and positive attitude.

Can I travel with my skater to competitions?

One of the best parts of synchronized skating is the team aspect of the sport. At all times, we try to promote teamwork between the skaters and team bonding beyond the time skaters spend on ice with each other. For competitions that require overnight travel, the teams travel as a team with chaperons as appropriate and prepare for competition as a team.

Parents typically travel individually and stay together at different hotels. For local competitions, skaters will travel as a team, unless alternate arrangements have been made with the coach.
